              <text>Donated by Doug Lott. Doug’s grandfather immigrated to Canada in 1885 and homesteaded a cattle ranch in the Elbow Valley, bordering the Tsuut'ina Nation. He married the daughter of the Indian Agent [Last name Lucas], and together they had three children while ranching in Alberta. The family relocated to Victoria, B.C., in 1907/1908 due to weather, bad season and loss of cattle. Doug’s father was born there in 1910. The collection of photos can be traced to Mable “May” Lott, the eldest daughter of the Lott family. May was a 'spinster' teacher who travelled extensively, and some of the photos document family life on their farm in Victoria. However, a significant portion of the collection includes images from the Calgary Stampede. Tentatively dated these slides from between 1912 and the 1920s. These may be glass plate negatives from a local photographer, possibly Oliver or Marcell, who created real photo postcards to sell during the early Stampedes.</text>
