<text>Wilf Carter was born in 1904 and is largely considered to be the father of Canadian Country Western Music. Born in Nova Scotia he started his singing career young, yodeling in traveling music shows along the East Coast. In 1929 he moved out west to Calgary soon found himself working for the local radio station CFCN (the voice of the Prairies), singing one night a week. This would lead him to working for the CBC and eventually the CPR where he entertained travellers as the toured the Canadian West. He released his first record in 1934 which became a hit in Canada and this was the beginning of a long and success career which spanned over 50 years. He also went by the moniker Montana Slim (especially in the States). In 1964 he first played at the Calgary Stampede, but had a long-time connection with the event prior too. He was also the Stampede Parade Marshall in 1979 and 1984</text>
