The photographs date from 1916. The men doing the exercises are on the tarmac between the grandstand and picket fence fencing off the infield. They are all wearing the same white pants and shirt with a dark circle on the front. They face the camera. The men are standing upright, with both their arms extended fully to either side.A portion of the grandstand is visible in the top left corner of the images. There are men seated on the grandstand; some wear civilian clothes, some military uniforms, some white exercise uniforms. Some of the men wearing military uniforms are playing instruments. There are also many other men wearing dark military uniforms standing on the tarmac. There are other buildings to the right of the grandstand. In the background, there are some houses built on top of a plateau. On the far-left side of the photo, there is white text reading “R120 W.V. Ring.” Still left of the middle, but closer to the bottom of the photo, there is white text reading “No. 1. Class – Physical Drill 82nd 0. Battn C.E.F. Calgary. 1916.” Photo has a purple stamp on the reverse stating "W.V. Ring Photographer Wright Block 221A Eighth Avenue E Calgary."

The 82nd Battalion, CEF was an infantry battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. Provided reinforcements for the Canadian Corps. Disbanded in 1917, after the war.
